LOCALITY

INFORMATION

Image titleThe name Msida comes from the Arabic word "msayda", meaning 'a fisherman's place'. Today, it is known for vessels of a different kind as the creek hosts a modern Yacht Marina with over 250 berths. Msida began to take on the vestiges of a town in the early 1700s when a leading German Knight of the Order of St John, Baron Wolfgang Von Guttenberg had a house here. He funded the building of a washing place for local people. The vaulted building still stands today. Apart from pleasant marina-side walks and views, Msida highlights include one of Malta's unique cave chapels dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady, and an elegant baroque church, dedicated to St Joseph, built at the turn of the 19th century. The town hosts the campus of the University of Malta and Mater Dei Hospital on its outskirts.
